"What a fantastic course Andy! You had the entire course planned so well, with just the right amount of 'stepping back' to get us confident in making decisions about navigating the direction of travel and options for our evening camp spots. I felt completely safe under your guidance, which was very important to me. Ultimately, you created a weekend that felt like an amazing "off grid" adventure, with a gentle manner of guiding us through the journey, encouraging us to become more confident along the way. Thank you!"

"An excellent morning spent on a beautiful day in Hamstead Heath, going over the finer points of map reading skills. A guy with a life time of experience, he is an easy going instructor who is thorough & comprehensive. This was a refresher that exceeded my expectations in every way, & at a very very reasonable cost. Outstanding. Thanks Andy!"

"Andy was perfect for us - knowledgeable, personable, encouraging without being pushy and gave us all a feeling of great reassurance. Thanks Andy, the experience exceeded my expectations! I really enjoyed seeing parts of Dartmoor I haven’t been to before, and being put slightly out of my comfort zone with the Navigation. I’m eager for more now, and that’s always a good sign!"

"Very enjoyable day out. Andy was excellent and both patient & knowledgeable. The style was informal (which I liked) which put me at ease and no question was too much trouble. Andy was attentive and was happy to recap and practice one area of navigation that was a little more tricky to understand - for me at least! Very pleased I booked this course."

"Andy was a brilliant teacher. He gave me map symbol information, compass using skills, then we began to use that information to plot a route. He told me to pick out a landmark on the map, and showed how to link the time taken to the distance walked, so that you can soon know if you are off course, which would be especially important in fog! Luckily it was a sunny day... Although they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, (I'm 68) I feel much more confident about negotiating the way on my next adventure. Usually I let my walking pals lead me, but I will volunteer next time in order to test out my learning in real time."

"I have been looking for a map reading course for beginners. I have qualified as a Trail leader and I live in London. Most courses seem to be outside of London, and with the cost of the courses and travel it works out expensive. So to find this course on my doorstep was amazing! Andy the instructor was really good! I have no experience of reading a map and using a compass, so I feel this is an important to skill to have as a trail leader. He was patient and took his time to explain in detail what to look out for when using a map. He also took the time to send me the main points on what he covered in the session for future reference. I would recommend this course to anyone who lives in London, loves the outdoors, and would like to explore further with the use of a map and compass... you will not be disappointed!!"

"The Navigation for Beginners course in Hampstead Heath was excellent. Andy took us through different map types including scales and features, how to estimate distances and timings, and how to use the compass and map together to plot your hiking route. During several short walks we practiced these skills and also learned how to take and use bearings. We learned so much - we'd thoroughly recommend this course!"

"This was a valuable course where I learned a range of techniques, from basic navigation to specific methods for when it is too misty to have visibility. Andy was very patient and took the time to explain things in multiple way so they would sink in. Richmond park is also a great location for such exercise as the terrain is varied enough for you to test your newly acquired skills, but still urban so accessible for us carless Londoners. Highly recommend to anyone thinking of venturing in nature. Knowing how to extract yourself from a specific location and make it to safety without relying on electronics gives you a new sense of confidence"
